Note: Masters Section cancelled due to insufficient registration (we had to cancel before onsite registration closed to allow those players eligible for both sections to choose to play in FIDE Under 2200)

Amateur prizes are now based on 37 players

 

Sections: Three sections (Masters, FIDE Under 2200, and US Chess Under 1400).

  • Masters (FIDE Rated) - 5 round event open to US Chess rated 2100 and above.
  • FIDE Under 2200 (FIDE Rated) - 7 round event open to players with a FIDE rating below 2200.
  • Under 1400 (US Chess rated only) - 7 round event open to players with a US Chess rating below 1400.

Masters section:

Players must have a US Chess Rating of 2100 and above to enter this section. Free entry to GMs, WGMs, IMs, WIMs, FMs, & WFMs.

Time Control: 5 rounds at 40/100, SD/30, with a 10 second increment

Prizes:

  • 1st: $400
  • 2nd: $250
  • 3rd: $150

FIDE Under 2200 section:

Prizes and pairings are based on FIDE rating. For players who do not have a FIDE rating, a converted US Chess rating is used. Players must have a FIDE rating below 2200 to enter this section.

Time Control: 7 rounds at G/80, with a 10 second increment

  • Saturday 9:00 am, 1:00 pm, 5:00 pm
  • Sunday 9:00 am, 1:00 pm, 5:00 pm

  • 1st: $325
  • 2nd: $200
  • 3rd: $125
  • U1800 FIDE: $100
  • U1600 FIDE: $75

Under 1400 section (not FIDE-rated):

Players must have a US Chess Rating below 1400 or unrated to enter this section.

Time Control: 7 rounds at G/80, with a 10 second increment

Entry Fees:

  • $60 by 11/22 (U1400 $45 by 11/22)
  • $65 by 11/29 (U1400 $50 by 11/29)
  • $75 by 12/5 (U1400 $60 by 12/5)
  • $80 afterward or onsite (U1400 $65 afterward or onsite)

Free entry and & US Chess membership available to a limited number of City of Chicago scholastic players with financial need (honor system). Email for details. Yes, free entries count towards "based on 60 players"!

Parents, this is a slow time-control event. Players under ten years old with a rating under 900 may not be ready for this event. (Check out our Rated Beginners' Open events.)

Max 2 half-point byes are available in any round.

Sets and clocks are provided

Default time for all rounds is 1 hour from the actual start of each round.

PARKING

All-day parking is available for $7 in the UIC Halsted/Taylor Parking Structure at 760 W. Taylor St. with purchase of parking sticker (normal all-day rate is $8.50).

CTA

Take Blue Line CTA train to UIC Halsted or 8 bus (Halsted) to Polk or 12 bus (Roosevelt) to Halsted.

METRA

Union Station is a 0.8 mile walk , Ogilvie Transportation Center is a 1.1 mile walk . Short taxi ride from all Loop METRA stations.

DINING

Argo Tea may be open on the second floor of Student Center East; Chick-fil-A is open most Saturdays. There are several great restaurants in Little Italy and Greektown within walking distance, but we'd suggest waiting until dinner to visit them. Quick dining options within a half-mile walk include:
