Kentucky Quad B Regional Championships
The Quad B Regional Championships is a combined individual and team event.
- Regional Titles: Determines individual champions for the Louisville-area region. You do not have to be on a team to compete for these.
- State Qualification: The top four teams in each section qualify for the Kentucky State Team Championships.
- Eligibility: Non-residents of Quad B are welcome to play but are ineligible for trophies and medals. Non-KY-resident students in Kentucky schools may contribute to their school's team state qualification. See below for Quad B boundaries.

5 Rounds Team-Modified Swiss; G/25; d5. Sections: K-1, K-3, K-5, K-8, K-12.
Entry Fees and Registration
- Entry Fee: By 4 Feb, $25 for the first child; $6 for each additional sibling. After 4 Feb, first child fee rises to $30. See the bottom of this posting for sibling discount instructions. Free or discounted entry is available for those who need it; e-mail k12@kychess.org to arrange this.
- Registration: Online only via King Registration. No on-site registration. Online registration closes at 11 PM ET the night before the tournament.
- Capacity: Initially capped at 200 participants. We hope to secure an additional room to expand to 250.
- School Payments: If a school is paying for students and cannot use King Registration, contact k12@kychess.org by 31 Jan to arrange alternate means of payment.
- Bye requests: Half-point byes may be requested for any round during online registration only (1 max).
- Non-residents: Non-residents of Quad B should identify themselves by e-mailing k12@kychess.org.
Schedule
- Mandatory Check-In: 8:00 AM – 8:30 AM.
- Round 1: 9:00 AM.
- Rounds 2–5: ASAP.
- Lunch: 30+-minute break between Round 2 and Round 3 (approx. 11:00-11:30 AM). Concessions will be available for purchase.
- Awards: As sections finish; estimated completion by 3:00 PM for slowest section. K-1 and K-3 typically finish much earlier.
Note: Players not checked in by 8:30 AM will receive a 1/2-point bye and will not be paired for Round 1. If running late, email k12@kychess.org by 8:30 AM to preserve your Round 1 pairing.
Tournament Rules & Logistics
- Teams: Teams are ranked based on their top four scorers in the tournament (you do not specify which four to use in advance). The top four teams in each section qualify for state. Teams are scored, ranked, and qualify separately for each section. In some years, additional “wild card” teams will qualify. Regulations concerning team composition, homeschool teams, etc. can be found in section H of the Blue Book. For questions, e-mail k12@kychess.org .
- Equipment: Boards and pieces provided. Some clocks will be available, but bring your own if you have one.
- Notation: Required for grades 6+. Players not taking notation will be assessed a time penalty. Players are responsible for bringing their own notation sheets and writing utensils. Printable score sheets can be found here.
- Byes: One 1/2-point bye available if requested during online registration.
- Special Qualifications: Any Kentucky-resident girl who finishes undefeated qualifies for the inaugural Kentucky Girls Championship (Spring 2026).
- Technical Rules: Rule 15A (writing moves prior to making them) and 10I2 (touching rook first when castling) are in effect. Accelerated pairings may be used. The TD reserves the right to use live Regular or Quick ratings for pairing purposes. The “No-Show” or “Forfeit” time for late arrival is 30 minutes for all sections. Electronic scoresheets are prohibited.
- Registering for the tournament includes consent to be contacted by the KCA for future tournaments.
Amenities & Safety
- Supervision: Players under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the event.
- Concessions: Available for purchase on-site.
- Seating: Parents/players are strongly encouraged to bring camp chairs and folding tables.

Registering with the sibling discount
To get the use sibling discount, you need to use the discount codeSIBLING for the second and subsequent kids. However, King Registration applies any discount code give to all kids in your cart, so you need to register in either of the following ways: (1) register the first kid in one transaction, then make a second transaction with the SIBLING discount code for the remainder, or (2) add all but one kid, apply the SIBLING discount code, and then add the last kid at full price.
