The Hawaii Chess Federation Announces   

2024 Hawaii State Senior (50+)

Chess Championship

  • When: Sunday, May 26th, 2024, from 8:00am to 6:30pm (Round 1 may be played Saturday evening at 6:30pm).
  • Where:  Washington Middle School Cafeteria, using folding chairs and tables.  (Bring a pad to sit on).  
  • Swiss Pairing System:  4 rounds, non-elimination, rated by the US Chess Federation.  Membership required.
  • Time Control: Game in 45 minutes with a 15-second increment.  (Clocks and chess sets provided at the event.)  
  • Keeping Score: Players are required to keep score until one player has less than 5 minutes.
  • Hawaii Representative:  The winner of the tournament earns the right to the represent Hawaii at the Irwin Tournament of State Senior Champions at the 2024 US Open in Norfolk, Virginia.
  • Trophies: For top 3 individuals.  Champions or Co-Champions' names will be engraved on the Hawaii Senior Chess Champion Perpetual Trophy.  Medals for each category:  A, B, C, D, E, u1000, Unrated.
  • Tie Breaks: Players tied for titles will be proclaimed as co-champions. USCF standard tiebreaks will be used to determine trophy distribution.  A rapid playoff (G10 d5) will decide the Irwin representative.
  • Family Pairings:  Family members will not be paired before the final round unless necessary.
  • Byes: Any player may have a ½-point bye, in any round, if requested before 8am on Sunday.  (Request a 0-point bye in Round 1 if you wish to play the first round on Saturday evening at 6:30.)

  • 7:40  Check in
  • 8:00  Players meeting (required)
  • 8:10  Round 1 (Optional to play Round 1 at 6:30 Saturday evening).
  • 10:30  Round 2  (may start earlier, please don't leave)
  • Lunch Break
  • 2:00  Round 3  (may start earlier, please check with TD for updated round 3 start time before leaving for lunch)
  • 4:30  Round 4 (may start earlier, please don't leave)
  • 6:30  Awards
  • Registration: Register on the kingregistration.com link by May 18th to get the best rate.
  • Entry Fee: Early Bird entry fee is $20 per player, $10 for additional family members if registered by 11:59 pm on May 18th. Standard entry fee is $25 per player, $15 for additional family members if registered by 11:59 pm on May 25th. (If the entry fee is challenging for a player or a family, please let us know on the registration form and we will work with you.)
  • Late Registration: Entry fee after 11:59 pm on Saturday, May 25th, is $30 with no discounts.  
  • USCF Membership: Required.  First check your expiration date, then register for USCF if necessary.

Note:  Want to warm up for the tournament?  Seniors can also play in the Memorial Day Sectionals on Saturday, May 25th.  Your choice of rapid (15/3) or action (30/5) time controls.  You can play the morning (9:00-noon), the afternoon (1:00-4:00) or both.
