2024 Memorial Day Weekend Chess Sectional Tournaments
- Date: Saturday, May 25th, 2024
- Time: 8:30am to 5:30pm.
- Participants: Hawaii K-12 chess players and adult players. K-6 players can choose to play adults or not.
- Where: Washington Middle School cafeteria, 1633 S. King St.
- Sections: Octets (8-player groups), Hextets (6-player groups) and Quads (4-player groups).
- Round-robin Pairing System: Groups of similarly-rated players, non-elimination, rated by the USCF.
- Time Control: Choice of Game in 30 minutes with a 5-second increment (G/30 +5 is "Action Chess," and USCF rated both regular and quick), or Game in 15 with a 3-second increment (G/15 +3 is USCF quick-rated only).
- Section Times: Players choose between morning-only, afternoon-only and all-day sections. Half-day sections cost half as much as all-day sections.
- Supervision: On-site supervision by a coach, parent or designated guardian is required for all players under 16.
- Writing moves: US Chess Federation required players write all moves for G/30 games, except K-2 players.
- Individual Prizes: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals in each Octet. Cash prizes based on entries.
- Tie Breaks: For players with the same score, USCF standard tiebreaks will determine trophy and medal distribution.
- Family Pairings: Family and team members will not be placed in the same section unless requested or necessary.
- Byes: Byes are not available in round-robin tournaments. You can choose to play in the morning or afternoon.
- Bonus Points: USCF bonus rating points cannot be received in 3-round events like Quads. If you want your rating to go up a lot, play in the Octet (7-rounds) and perform significantly above your rating.
SCHEDULE:
- 7:30 to 8:15am - Check in
- 8:45am - Mandatory players meeting
- 9:00am to Noon - Morning sections
- 12:30 - Lunch Break
- 1:00pm to 4:00pm - Afternoon sections
- 4:30 to 5:30pm - Whole-day sections finish
- Players who have not registered and paid before 8:00am on the day of the tournament will not be paired in the first round, and might not be able to compete at all.
Entry Fee:
- $15 early-bird for registration received by midnight on Friday, May 18th
- $20 regular entry fee, received by Thursday, May 23 at midnight.
- $10 entry fee discount for each additional family member (use budget code OHANA)
- $25 per player late entry fee, if registration received after Thursday, 5/23, at midnight
- $30 per player on-site entry fee if received after Thursday, 5/23 at midnight.
- Half-day sections cost half as much as full-day sections.
- Financial aid is available if needed. Please request in advance.
