CHESS KID INFO

You will be receiving an email from chess kid with your special user name and login ID by February 11th. Your child will receive a specific ChessKid login ID for this event. DO NOT use any other ChessKid login ID for this event other than the one emailed specifically to you for this event. DO NOT use this special ChessKid login for any purpose other than to compete in this event.

FORMAT

Other than the first round, there are no "set" round times like in an over-the-board tournament. The next round begins when all games have finished from the previous round. In practice, this means the tournament will likely take about 3.5 - 4 hours to complete, although you should plan for five hours.

Grades K-5 will be US Chess Online Quick-Chess rated.
Grades 6-12 will be US Chess Online Regular-Chess rated.

NO BYES ALLOWED!!  Please disregard that option on registration page.

Individual Prizes

Plaques for the first place finisher in each region for every section. Plaques for the 2nd-5th placed finishers overall in every section. Players will receive a custom plaque via mail. Please ensure that the player's address is entered correctly during registration. Please note: the exact value of tiebreaks shown on ChessKid at the immediate conclusion of the event may be different from the official results.  All results - including tiebreaks - are tentative until the 3- week review period has been completed.

TIE-BREAKS

When individual scores are equal, the following order of tie-break systems will be used to designate individual awards:  1) Modified Median, 2) Median, 3) Solkoff, 4) Sonneborn-Berger 5) Cumulative

When school team scores are equal, the following order of tie-break systems will be used to designate team awards:  1) Total Individual Median, 2) Total Solkoff, 3) Total Sonneborn-Berger, 4) Total Cumulative

Team Prizes

Plaques to the top four (4) individuals for the top finishing team in each section. Teams are defined as players attending the same school or attending the same homeschool group and playing in the same section. A team must have a minimum of two players. Only the scores of the top four (4) highest scoring players are counted towards team points. However, there is no limit to the number of players on a team.

ChessKid reserves the right to ask for proof of identity for all prize winners.

SPECIAL RULES AND ANSWERS TO FAQs

  • "Championship" sections are open to all with the grades specified, but "Under" sections are only open to those with established or provisional US Chess ratings below that threshold or to players that are unrated.
  • Ratings for pairings and section assignment purposes are according to the higher of the US Chess "over- the-board" rating from the US Chess February Rating Supplement or the player's US Chess Online Rating published on the player's MSA page for February. However, the event will be US Chess online rated after it concludes.
  • All players must be current members of the US Chess Federation before registration and membership must be valid through February 28, 2021.
  • Students are not allowed to play "up" into an older grade division, however a player with a rating below the "Under" threshold can play in the Championship section within his grade band.
  • The tournament staff will have discretion on determining whether or not a player's February published rating will move that player into a higher rating section within the same grade division.
  • Unrated players will be listed at a rating of 300 on the tournament day for tournament purposes.
  • The ChessKid pairing system (not the US Chess Swiss pairing system) will be used to pair players. Although individual team prizes will be awarded, there will be no team pairing restrictions in place. Although it may not happen often, teammates may play each other depending on their scores.

Fair Play

https://www.chesskid.com/videos/fair-play

  • ChessKid and the tournament organizers expect that all children and their families will abide by the rules governing fair play. Both the child and the parent/guardian will have to agree to our fair play policies when registering for the event.
  • This is what will be agreed to upon registering for the event:
  • ChessKid and the tournament organizers will run this event with the highest level of integrity and ethics. All players must play fairly and use good sportsmanship.
  • We strictly forbid cheating of any kind. ChessKid will use its own algorithms to monitor games and will also manually analyze selected games at its discretion.
  • All of your moves must be your own. You must not get help from anyone or anything else, including but not limited to coaches, friends, parent siblings, chess engines, books magazines, videos or any other software of any kind.
You must also not have a phone, tablet, or any other electronic device (other than medically necessary devices) in the same room during play.
  • You are only allowed to have one browser tab open and no other programs running on your computer. Violating this rule could lead to a "technical forfeiture" and you could be disqualified with no chance at prizes.
  • You agree that ChessKid will make the final determination on any fair play issue and that the Chief TD will make the final decision on any potential player penalties, including but not limited to forfeiture and/or removal from the tournament.
  • If you violate the ChessKid Fair Play Policy, ChessKid could close your regular ChessKid account and label it as having violated the Fair Play Policy.
If you are not willing to agree to the above policies, you will not be allowed to play in the tournament.

The tournament organizers and ChessKid take Fair Play very seriously!

It is particularly important that all participants understand the Fair Play rules, that viewing the specific video is mandatory, and all participants understand and pledge to abide by the above Fair Play rules.
