    • Upper: before 9:35am
    • Beginner: before 10:20am

    • Upper:
      • If running behind schedule, rounds will start 15mins after previous round
      • Round 1: October 30, 9:45am
      • Round 2: October 30, 11:00am

Sections, Format and Time Controls

Upper Section

  • Eligibility:
    • USCF rating of 700 or above
    • Players with rating 400-699 can play for an additional fee of $20
  • Format: 4 rounds Swiss Format
  • Time Control: G55;d5 (55mins on the clock for each player, with 5sec delay for each move)
  • Rounds:
    • If running behind schedule, rounds will start 15mins after previous round
    • Round 1: October 30, 9:45am
    • Round 2: October 30, 11:00am
    • Round 3: October 30, 1:15pm
    • Round 4: October 30, 3:30pm
  • Rating:
    • Latest known USCF rating will be used for pairings.
    • Directors may override known USCF ratings if stale, or if reliable ratings from other sources are available.

Beginner Section - Under 700

  • Eligibility:
    • USCF rating under 700
    • Unrated players are encouraged to play and build up rating
  • Format: 4 rounds Swiss Format each day
  • Time Control: G25;d5 (25mins on the clock for each player, with 5sec delay for each move)
  • Rounds:
    • If running behind schedule, rounds will start 5mins after previous round
    • Round 1: October 30, 10:30am
    • Round 2: October 30, 12:00pm
    • Round 3: October 30, 1:15pm
    • Round 4: October 30, 2:30pm 
  • Rating:
    • Latest known USCF rating will be used for pairings.
    • Directors may override known USCF ratings if stale, or if reliable ratings from other sources are available.

 

Prizes & Trophies

  • Trophies
    • Upper: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies
    • Beginner: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies
  • Prizes
    • Gift cards (either chess-related or Barnes & Noble) for:
      • $50: 1st place in each section
      • $25: 2nd place in each section
      • $25: Best "mid-rating" player in each section
        • e.g., Best U350 in Beginner section
      • $25: Best unrated player in each section
        • Not awarded if no unrated player in section
      • $25: Best female player in each section
      • $10: Biggest upset in each section
        • Unrated players eligible in Beginner section only. Counted as 100 rating
  • Prizes and trophy awarding follow standard USCF rules.
  • Prizes contingent on 10 registrations in each section.

 

Registration

  • Registration is handled on King Registration. Day-of, on-site registrations can also be on the platform, but organizers might be able to provide options.
  • Entry Fees:
    • Upper:
      • Before Oct 17: $35
      • Before Oct 30: $45
      • On Oct 30: $50
    • Beginner:
      • Before Oct 17: $30
      • Before Oct 30: $35
      • On Oct 30: $40

 

Byes, Withdrawals & Refunds

  • Byes:
    • 2x half-point byes can be requested.
    • Byes can be requested until 10mins before start of Round 3.
    • Byes for a round must be requested at least 10mins before round start.
  • Withdrawals:
    • Players may withdraw up to 30mins before Round 1 for a partial refund
    • Players withdrawing after Round 1 starts will not receive a refund
  • Refunds:
    • If eligible for a refund, $5 service fees will be deducted from the refund amount

 

Tournament Rules & Policies

  • No electronic devices should be on a player while rounds are in progress. This includes computers, phones, tablets, smartwatches.
  • Notation is required. Exceptions will be considered only for the Beginner section with a time reduction to compensate.
  • USCF rules will be followed.
  • Tiebreaks, in order:
    • Head-to-head
    • Modified Median
    • Solkoff
    • Sonnenborn-Berger
    • Cumulative

 

Food, Breaks & Amenities

  • Lunch will be provided
  • Drinking water will be available
