Tamil Sangam of Hampton Roads and HRCA are partnering to run a chess competition in conjunction with their Deepavali celebration.

There are five sections available for children of all ages and abilities.

Junior Rookie (students in grades Pre-K through 5 with limited or no experience at chess tournaments, no US Chess Federation membership required) -- NO RATED PLAYERS ALLOWED

Senior Rookie (students in grades 6-12 with limited or no experience at chess tournaments, no US Chess Federation membership required) -- NO RATED PLAYERS ALLOWED

Novice (U500) (students in grades Pre-K through 12 with US Chess Federation memberships and regular OTB ratings below 500)

Amateur (U1000) (students in grades Pre-K through 12 with US Chess Federation memberships and regular OTB ratings below 1000)

Elite (students in grades Pre-K through 12 with US Chess Federation membership and regular OTB rating 1000+)

The time control is G/25; d3, meaning each player has 25 total minutes to complete their moves, with a 3 second "delay" (grace period) per move before the clock starts counting down.  Games can last a maximum of about 56 minutes.  We will play four rounds using the "Swiss" system, which is similar to a bracket system.  This is NOT an elimination event.  You will play all four rounds (unless given a bye for one round for an uneven number of players).

Trophies will be awarded to the top three players in each of these five sections. Trophies will be presented at the Tamil Sangam Deepavali celebration on October 28th.  All players will receive a participation ribbon on site at the competition.

Boards, sets, and some clocks are provided. Bring a chess clock if you own one. Notation is not required in any section for quick time controls.  Parents, bring a camp chair if you are remaining on site.

Schedule -- After Round 1, round start times are approximate / latest possible -- pairings will be "ASAP" -- as soon as a section finishes all games, they will be paired and begin the next round.
