Youth and adults, join us for a fun summer tournament where even kids can win cash prizes!

You MUST register online by Noon on Friday, July 25th.  NO ON-SITE ENTRIES!

Venue capacity is limited -- reserve your spot now!

SCHEDULE:

  • 8:30-9:30 - Arrival / check-in

  • 9:30 AM - New Player Orientation

  • 10:00 AM -- Round 1 begins for all sections

  • Subsequent rounds will be "ASAP", meaning they will begin as soon as the previous round is complete.  There is no awards ceremony for this event.  We cannot give an exact finish time -- likely around 5 PM.

  •  Lunch:  We will take a short lunch break, to be announced on site, based on progress of the rounds.  There are no concessions on site but ample fast-food establishments within a half-mile of the church.

PARTICIPANTS:  Adults may play only in the Open section, regardless of rating.  U800, U400, and Unrated are for youth in rising grades Pre-K through 12th only (scholastic) -- no adults.  US Chess membership required for Open, U800, and U400.  No US Chess membership required for the Unrated section.  This is not an HRCA Scholastic Cup event.  HRCA membership is not required.

FORMAT  A Swiss System (like a bracket system -- not an elimination event!) tournament of four or five rounds based on entries.  Time control is G/40; d5, meaning each side has 40 minutes to complete all their moves, and the clock will not start counting down for the first 5 seconds of each move. Select a bye during registration ONLY if you know you will be missing a round due to a conflict with another event.  One half-point bye allowed if requested prior to the start of Round 3.

Section choices are:

  • Unrated:  Rising grades Pre-K through 12th (for the 2024-2025 school year) with little to no tournament experience.  No rated players allowed.  US Chess membership not required.
  • U400:  Youth in rising grades Pre-K-12 for the upcoming school year (no adults) who are US Chess members with a Regular over-the-board (OTB) rating Under 400.  The July supplement will be used.  Unrated players are allowed in the U400 section and are eligible for place prizes only.

  • U800:  Youth in rising grades Pre-K-12 for the upcoming school year (no adults) who are US Chess members with a Regular over-the-board (OTB) rating Under 800.  The July supplement will be used.  Unrated players are allowed in the U800 section and are eligible for place prizes only.

  • Open:  Any players, youth or adult, who are US Chess members -- unrated or of any rating -- but designed for players rated over 800.  Unrated players are allowed in the Open section and are eligible for place prizes only.

AWARDS:

  • This is a prize money ONLY tournament.  There are no trophies or medals.  Scholastic sections will receive a participation ribbon on their boards at the start of the final round.
  • There is no award ceremony.  Players who need to leave before final determination of prizes and think they won money will be directed to leave their payment information with us.  Players remaining on site may receive a check if desired or leave information for electronic payment.  PLAYERS WILL NOT BE PAID IN CASH.  Scholastic players desiring electronic payment and remaining on site will receive a souvenir mock check to take home.
  • PRIZE MONEY is based on 80 entries.  This means if there are fewer or more entries, prize money will be lowered or raised by that percentage.  ***UPDATED PRIZES AS OF 7/24 ENTRIES***  Increases and new prizes in blue

REFUNDS:   If you need to withdraw, please contact the Event Organizer.   There are absolutely NO refunds after tournament begins.

Refunds will be given as a tournament credit ONLY.    Refunds create a lot of administrative work and loss of important operational revenue to HRCA.   Our default refund is to now give participants a CREDIT towards a future HRCA tournament.  The credited amount will be $30 (early entry less a $5 admin fee) and is valid for 1 year.

**Please check the ENTRY LIST before registering to make sure you do not register multiple times.   Duplicate entries are subject to an administrative refund fee of $10.

Safe Play and Code of Conduct:   It is our goal to provide a fun, safe, and supportive environment.  Community partnerships are vital to HRCA, and we want to ensure we remain good stewards to our partners and their facilities. There is a lot of downtime during tournaments -- parents are responsible for supervising their children when they are not playing a scheduled match.

Please note only designated areas of the facility are open to players and guests.   No one is allowed in undesignated areas (including classrooms) at any time.

By registering and attending in this event (as participant or guest), you acknowledge and agree to abide by the US Chess Federation's Safe Play Policy, and HRCA's Code of Conduct and General Liability Waiver and Release.  For more information on Safe Play or HRCA's Code of Conduct and General Liability Waiver and Release, please click the BLUE links above.   Violations of these policies may result in warnings, or ultimately, disqualification or dismissal from the event without refund.
