Slover Salute to Moms Chess Tournament

Slover Library
235 E Plume St, Norfolk, VA 23510

Join us for a chess tournament being held at Slover Library in Norfolk, Virginia to salute our moms, who will have their very own section to play in!  The scholastic sections of this tournament are open to youth in grades Pre-K through 12th grade broken down by age and ability.

Format:

This is a Swiss tournament of 4 or 5 rounds depending on number of entries.  It is not an elimination event.  You will play all rounds unless you request or are assigned a bye for a round.  The time control for all games is G/30; d5 -- each player has 30 minutes to complete all their moves, and if you make a move in 5 seconds or less, no time is deducted from your clock.  If you are new to chess tournaments, be prepared for an all-day event.

Available sections and prizes:

Junior Rookie:  For players in Pre-K through 5th grade with little to no tournament experience.  US Chess membership is not required.  Trophies to the top 5 individual players, class trophies to top 3 individual players in grades Pre-K through 3rd and top player in grades Pre-K through 1st.

Senior Rookie:  For players in 6th-12th grade with little to no tournament experience.  US Chess membership is not required.  Trophies to the top 5 individual players.  Based on entries, trophies may also be awarded to top 3 middle school players if a significant number of high school players enter.

Novice (U500):  For players in grades Pre-K through 12th grade with US Chess membership, unrated or rated Under 500 regular over-the-board rating on the March 2023 supplement.  This is a rated section.  Trophies to the top 5 individual players, Top U300, and Top Unrated.

Open:  For players in grades Pre-K through 12th grade with US Chess membership of any rating.  Unrated players are allowed, and playing up is allowed.  This is a rated section.  Trophies to the top 5 individual players and Top U700.  Possible additional "under" trophies based on entries.

Ladies:  Designed for moms or female guardians of registered players, this section is open to any woman age 18+.  No US Chess membership required.  NOT a rated section.  Trophies to the top 5 individual players.  ***THIS SECTION IS FREE ENTRY!!!***

SPECIAL TEAM TROPHIES to the Top 3 Mom (or female guardian) - Child teams (combined scores) in the tournament.

There are no school team trophies at this event.

In all sections, players with an even score or better, but below trophy standings, receive a medal.  All other participants receive a ribbon.

Parking:

The adjacent Main Street Garage has a daily maximum of $13.  The MacArthur Center garage across the street (about a block or so walk) has a daily maximum of only a dollar!  Once in the library, signs will be posted to direct you to the playing area.

Schedule:

If you register and pay in advance, you do not need to check in.  You will be paired for the first round.  If you do not show up and forfeit the first round, you will be withdrawn.  We will be on site around 8:00 AM if you want to arrive early to settle in.  The library opens at 9 (security may let you in early).  There will be a new player orientation at 9:30 AM.  The first round begins at 10:00 AM.  Because skittles (waiting) space is limited and we encourage families to spread out throughout the library and explore the downtown area time permitting, round times for this event are set so you know when to return to the playing hall -- 10:00, 11:15, (lunch break), 1:00, 2:15, 3:30 (as necessary).  Awards ceremony will immediately follow the completion of the final round.  The library closes at 5 PM.

Food:

There are numerous restaurants available in walking distance.  We will take a short lunch break to allow all players to eat.  Food is allowed in the library, but only on the lower level where we will be playing.

Entry Fee:

The cost of this event is $30 for scholastic players, women FREE in the Ladies section.  The deadline to enter at these rates is midnight on Wednesday, May 15th.  Online entries after this time and on site are $5 more.  Withdrawals requested prior to the start of Round 1 are refundable minus a $5 processing fee.  Withdrawals after the start of Round 1 are non-refundable.
