Hampton Roads Chess Association, as a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to bringing the life benefits of chess to people of all ages and abilities throughout our region, strives to turn nobody away for inability to pay.  To help our families in need, we established the Joan H. Schlich Memorial Scholarship Fund in the name of a beloved coach and truly the "godmother of chess" in Hampton Roads.  COVID has brought tough times financially, increasing the demand on and depleting our limited scholarship funds.  100% of the net proceeds from this tournament, which will be entirely staffed by volunteers, will go directly into our scholarship fund for the 2021-2022 season.

Join us on August 28th for a four round Swiss tournament (4SS) at Game in 40 with a 5 second delay (G/40; d5) (dual-rated) in our new location in the Town Center area of Virginia Beach.  The event is open to players of all ages, divided into four sections by ability.  Players in the Open (800+), Amateur (U800), and Novice (U400) sections must have current US Chess membership.  Players in the Rookie (Not Rated) section are not required to have US Chess membership.  The August rating supplement will be used, and the higher of the Regular Online or Regular Over-the-Board (OTB) rating will be used for section and prize eligibility and pairings.

Because "Skittles" space is limited, players may be scattered between a small conference room and some covered outdoor space downstairs when they finish their games.  Therefore, we will have set round times to assist players in planning when to be back in Suite 515 for their games.  The Town Center area is a fantastic place for you to explore if you find yourself with ample times between rounds.  There is a fountain plaza and numerous shops and restaurants within walking distance of the playing site.

Check-in:  8:00-9:00 AM (players who do not arrive by 9 AM may not be paired for Round 1)

Round 1:  9:30 AM

Round 2:  11:30 AM

Round 3:  1:30 PM

Round 4:  3:30 PM

Players may request up to ONE half-point bye if they must miss a round.  Additional bye requests will be 0 points.  Do not withdraw from the tournament without notifying a tournament director.

This is an over-the-board, US Chess rated event.  All players must abide by the Official Rules of Chess, 7th edition.  Players caught cheating (receiving any type of outside assistance, notes, or analysis board) will be immediately removed from the event and have their results overturned.  HRCA may submit any cheating case to the US Chess Ethics Committee for determination of fair play violations and potential national sanctions (loss of the right to play rated chess in the US).

Awards will immediately follow the completion of each section.  Awards will consist of trophies for the top 5 finishers in each section, medals for other players with even or plus scores, and ribbons for all other participants.  There are no cash prizes.

This event is limited to the first 72 players to register.  Thereafter, we will establish a wait list.  There is no on site entry / no walk-up registration for this event.  Once you register, be sure to immediately check the Entry List to be sure your registration went through.  We have changed our check-out system to eliminate past problems with PayPal.

Based on the most current CDC guidance, MASKS ARE REQUIRED AT ALL TIMES WHILE INDOORS at this event, regardless of vaccination status.  HRCA will provide sanitizing wipes and spray for players desiring to sanitize their equipment before rounds, as well as hand sanitizer.  We will not be screening players at check-in for COVID symptoms.  Please stay home if you are sick or believe you may have been exposed to COVID -- HRCA will refund all entry fees for sick players unless you request to donate the fees.  If you are a high risk player and require additional accommodations for prevention of COVID, please notify us in advance.

Boards, sets, notation sheets, pens/pencils, and a limited number of clocks will be provided.  Players are encouraged to bring their own chess clock and are allowed to use personal notation books or US Chess approved electronic notation devices.  Please notify us in advance if you require disability accommodations of any sort.

The entry fee for this event is $20.  At checkout, you will also have the opportunity to chip in a $3 contribution toward registration and admin fees, to ensure the maximum net proceeds for our scholarship fund.  If you are unable to attend the event and would still like to donate to our scholarship fund, or if you want to donate an amount over and above your entry fee, you may do so by clicking here: HRCA PayPal Giving Fund.  Donations made through the PayPal Giving Fund are tax deductible, and a receipt will be provided by PayPal.  100% of PayPal Giving Fund donations go directly to HRCA.
