General Information
- Date: Tuesday, March 26th, 2024.
- Time: 8:30am to 4:00pm (Blitz from 4:30pm to 6:30pm).
- Participants: Hawaii K-12 chess players for Scholastic. Open section is for anyone to play.
- Where: Washington Middle School cafeteria, 1633 S. King St.
- Sections: Grade levels K-2, K-5, K-8, K-12 and Open. Sections with few players might be combined.
- Equipment: All chess sets and clocks are provided. Thank you to those who help set them up and put them away.
- Supervision: On-site supervision by a coach, parent or designated guardian is required for all players under age 16.
- Bring: Water, snacks, headphones for kids (no noises in playing hall). Teams bring sun shade and beach chairs if possible.
Tournament Information:
- Swiss Pairing System: 4-rounds, Swiss pairing system, non-elimination, rated by the US Chess Federation.
- Time Control: Game in 40 minutes with a 5-second increment. Blitz: Game in 5 minutes with a 2-second increment.
- Writing moves: US Chess Federation requires players write all moves, except in the K-2 Section and Blitz section.
- Family Pairings: Family and team members will not be paired before the final round and then only if necessary.
- Byes: Any player may have up to two, ½-point byes, if requested before 8:30am. No byes in the Blitz tournament.
Prizes:
- Individual Prizes: Trophies for top 3 individuals in each section and grade-level champions.
- Team Awards: Based on top 3 scores from the same school (teams may be any size).
- Tie Breaks: For players with the same score, USCF standard tiebreaks will determine trophy and medal distribution. If there is a tie for first place, individuals and teams will be declared co-champions.

Entry Fee:
- $25 entry fee per player, or $20 early bird entry fee until March 12th. $10 discount for additional family members.
- $35 late entry fee per player, if received after registration deadline, Sunday night at midnight (no discounts).
- $40 on-site entry fee per player, if registration received after Monday night at 7pm (no discounts).
- Players who have not registered and paid by 8:00am on the day of the tournament will receive a ½-point bye in the first round.
- Financial aid is available to motivated chess players if needed. Please request in advance.
US Chess Federation Membership (required):
- USCF members please click here to find your ID number and expiration date.
- Non-members please register for the USCF here.
- Register for the USCF before filling out the tournament entry form.
- Non-members who arrive the morning of the tournament automatically receive a 1/2-point bye in the first round while their membership is being processed.
Blitz Tournament:
- Starts at 4:30pm, ends around 6:30pm.
- Play 7 games in a section of 8 players.
- Medals for prizes: 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
- 5 minutes per player with a 2-second increment.
- Entry fee included with registration for daytime tournament.
- Pay online Blitz entry fee only if you didn't enter the daytime tournament.
- Players grouped into sections of 8 based on ability, with colors pre-assigned.
