Saturday schedule:
8-9 AM - Check-in / on-site registration if space available
9-10 AM - Rookie full practice game with notation and clocks, Rookie Q&A (please attend or view pr-brief!)
10 AM -- Round 1 begins for all sections.
Subsequent rounds will be "ASAP", meaning they will begin as soon as the previous round is complete. We cannot give an exact finish time -- likely no later than 5 PM. Awards immediately following the completion of the final round.
LUNCH BREAK will happen -- timing TBD based on progress of tournament, likely after second round. Listen for announcement on site for when to be back for the next round.
Who: This is a scholastic tournament for children in Pre-K through 12th grades. There are sections for all abilities from beginner to advanced.
What: A Swiss System (like a bracket system -- not an elimination event!) tournament of four or five rounds based on entries. Tiime control is G/40; d5, meaning each side has 40 minutes to complete all their moves, and the clock will not start counting down for the first 5 seconds of each move.
Section choices are:
Junior Rookie: Grades Pre-K through 5th with little to no tournament experience. No rated players allowed. US Chess membership not required.
Senior Rookie: Grades 6th-12th with little to no tournament experience. No rated players allowed. US Chess membership not required.
Novice (U500): Children of all ages who are US Chess members with a Regular over-the-board (OTB) rating Under 500. The November supplement will be used. Unrated players are allowed in the Novice section and are eligible for place prizes or Top Unrated prizes only.
Open: Children of all ages who are US Chess members with a Regular OTB rating 500 and up. Players rated Under 500 are allowed to play up in the Open section. Unrated players are allowed in the Open section and are eligible for place prizes or Top Unrated prizes only.
Awards: TROPHIES to the Top 5 finishers in each section. Additional "class" trophies in each section based on school grade (Rookies) or rating (Novice and Open). Examples include Top U700 in Open, Top U300 in Novice, Top Unrated in each rated section, Top K-3rd grader, Top K-1st grader, etc. Final awards will be determined 10 days prior to the start of the event based on entries. MEDALS to all finishers below trophy standings who finish with at least an even score (half the possible points). RIBBONS to all remaining participants. TEAM TROPHIES to the Top 2-3 school teams in each section based on entries.
Entry Fee: $30 Entry Fee through 11:59 PM on Wednesday, November 15th. $35 beginning Thursday, November 16th and on site. $10 of each entry fee is non-refundable if you withdraw prior to the start of Round 1 - to cover registration and transaction fees lost. Donated entry fees for withdrawals are tax-deductible if you do not request a refund of the balance.
Additional Donations may be made through Zeffy (click to donate only if you are not participating or wish to donate additional funds to our Title 1 fundraiser -- entry fees are collected through the registration process).
