Saturday-Sunday, May 20-21, 2023

Basic Information: Both tournaments will be four-round, Swiss-System events.  Games held at the Riley County Seniors Services Center, 301 N 4th St, Manhattan, KS 66502.  Rated by the United States Chess Federation. 

Round Times: Check in: 8:30 – 9:45 AM, Sat 5/20, Rd. 1 5/20 10 AM, Rd. 2 5/20 5 PM, Rd. 3 5/21 10 AM, Rd. 4 5/21 5:00 PM. 

Players may request a single half-point bye for any round, by 9:45 AM 5/20.

Sections:  Open section, open to all players.  U1600 section, open to those rated under 1600 on the official May USCF rating list.  Kansas Senior, Open only to players resident in the state of Kansas, and who will be 50 years old on or before July 1, 2023.

Time Control: All moves must be completed in 90 minutes, with a 30-second increment per move starting from move 1.

Entry Fee:  Open and U1600:  $40 with advance registration by 5/15, $50 at the door.

Kansas Senior: No entry fee.  Both: USCF and KCA memberships required, KCA $7/year, or $10 for a family.  Please bring boards, sets and clocks if you have them.  Limited equipment available.

Prize Fund: (based on 40 players in Open or U1600) 

Open: 1st $250  2nd $150  3rd $100

U1600: 1st $150  2nd $100  3rd $50

Kansas Senior: 1st $50 plus bid to the Irwin Tournament of Senior State Champs.

The Club is sponsoring on May 20 -21, 2023 two tournaments.

  • Manhattan Open Chess Tournament 2023 (Guy Coffee Memorial)
  • The Kansas Senior Championship

The club will use the majority of the proceeds to establish the Guy Coffee Memorial Fund.

The fund’s mission is to promote chess in Manhattan KS.

The first project will be to raise funds for an outdoor chess table to be installed in a local park.

Donations will be sought at the tournament and on the Club’s Facebook page.

Goal Total is $ 2,500.

Club goal is half from Club members and tournament participants.
