Day & Time:
September 7, 2026, Monday, 3:00 PM - 6:30 PM

Entry Fee: $50/each tournament; Non-refundable and Non-transferable 

No-show penalty: Any player who is a no-show without any notification will be suspended from the KLC tournament for two months.

Time Control: G/30; d5 (Game in 30 minutes with a 5-second delay. Full game may last up to 1 hour.)

Rounds: Each tournament will have at least three rounds. All rounds will have the same time control (G/30; d5). (The beginner section will play four rounds if time allows it.)

Schedule: Round 1 starts at 3:00 PM on Monday. Please arrive by 2:45 PM. Consecutive rounds follow a so-called rolling schedule: after all games in a section of a round are finished, pairings will be posted, and the next round will start in 5-10 minutes. The expected end time is around 6:00 PM. Pickup at 6:00 PM (please arrive on time).

Bye request: One half-point bye is available upon request and must be requested AT LEAST 1 DAY before the tournament.

Rating: The monthly USCF supplemental rating is used to place players in sections and pair them. No playing up to a stronger section is allowed unless approved by Coach KIKI. The tournament director reserves the right to assign an estimated rating to players with non-USCF or online ratings.

The tournament will be USCF-rated. Current US Chess Membership is required to participate in the event.

All US Chess tournament rules apply. The tournament director's decisions are final. 

Notation: Required if your rating is 300+ (Coach Kiki’s requirement).

Guidelines for Electronic Notation Devices: Only US Chess-approved electronic notation devices are allowed.

Equipment: Chess set and clock:  KLC provides chess boards, sets, and clocks. You can bring your scorebook, but score sheets and pencils will also be available onsite.

Tiebreakers: When individual scores are equal, the tournament will follow the tie-break order listed in the US Chess Scholastic Regulations in order to determine awards:

1) Modified Median 2) Median 3) Solkoff

Step#1: Have your valid USCF member ID ready. USCF membership is required; if you are not a current member, you must renew or sign up via the official website of US Chess:

First, please visit our website www.kingslandchess.com click the “tournament” tab, and find the link for our regular Friday Night OTB tournament 

Second: Please find your name on the entry list after you register. If you cannot find your name on the entry list, it means your registration was not completed.

King’s Land Chess OTB Tournament Policies

Welcome to King’s Land Chess Club. The KLC club is a private club exclusively for KLC students. Our goal is to create a fun, safe, and fair place for all our students to practice, enjoy the game, and improve their chess skills.

We encourage all members to treat others as they would like to be treated and to follow the specific guidelines below. Players and community members who fail to follow these rules will be subject to warnings, removed from playing pools, and suspended from the KLC tournament. 

Community Conduct Policy

  • Be kind, helpful, and forgiving.
  • Do not abuse, attack, threaten, discriminate against, or mistreat other members in any way
  • Do not hijack threads, troll, or post distracting or meaningless content
  • Do not discuss illegal activities

Sportsmanship Policy

  • Respect your opponents
  • Do not rush your opponent to make a move if it's their turn
  • Do not harass or accuse your opponents
  • Do not use any offensive language or hurtful words

Fair Play Policy

  • Do not get help from any other person, player, or coach
  • Do not artificially manipulate ratings, matches, or game outcomes
  • Do not interfere with the gameplay of other members

How to Show Good Sportsmanship

1. Be supportive.

Read Me First:

Dear Chess Family,

The annual KLC GATE Selection Tournament is about to begin. First and foremost, I want to emphasize that this tournament is open to ALL chess players, whether you are currently enrolled in the GATE Program or are interested in joining in the future. Below is the schedule for the 2026 selection competition.

Once again, I would like to reiterate that this tournament is open to all players, and you are encouraged to invite any interested friends to participate. Feel free to forward this information to your chess friends as well.

Please note that we have limited spots available, so it's essential to register as soon as possible. Registration will close once all spots are filled. The tournament is divided into TWO stages. The preliminary rounds will take place on Labor Day, September 7th . The final rounds will be held on Friday, September 11th, from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM in Pleasanton. The detailed rules and procedures will be announced by Ms. Kiki.

The specific arrangements for the final rounds will be determined based on the number of participants in the preliminary round. Parents, please reserve September 7th and September 11th in advance. Current GATE students are required to participate in this selection.

Preliminary Rounds - Regular Rating System:

  • Grouping: By Grade Level
  • Date and Time Sep 7, 2026   Monday 3PM-6:30PM
  • Time Control: G/30 D5 (Game in 30 minutes, with a 5-second delay per move)
  • Number of Rounds: At least three rounds (maximum of four rounds)

Semi-Final Rounds - Quick Rating System:

  • The top 6 players from each group will advance to the final rounds

  • Time Control: G/15 D5 (Game in 15 minutes, with a 5-second delay per move)

Final Rounds - Blitz Rating System:

If there are tied players in the G/15 D5 chess tournament, we will proceed to a blitz chess match G/5+3 to determine the winner.

This tournament is US Chess rated.

  • A current US Chess membership is required.
  • Monthly US Chess supplemental ratings will be used for section placement and pairings.
  • Playing in a higher section is not permitted unless approved by Coach Kiki.
  • The Tournament Director may assign estimated ratings for players without an official US Chess rating.

KLC GATE Selection Process

The selection tournament consists of two stages.

Stage 1 — Preliminary Tournament

Date: Monday, September 7, 2026

Format

  • Grouped by grade level
  • US Chess Regular Rated
  • Time Control: G/30; d5
  • Minimum 3 rounds (up to 4 rounds)

The top six players from each section will advance to the finals.


Stage 2 — Finals

Date: Friday, September 11, 2026

Time: 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM

Location: Pleasanton

Format

  • Grouped by rating
  • US Chess Quick Rated
  • Time Control: G/15; d5

If players remain tied after the Quick tournament, a Blitz playoff (G/5; d3) will determine the winner.

Sections may be combined if participation is low.
