2024 Iowa Barber/Denker/Rockefeller Qualifier

The winner of each section will have the right to represent Iowa in the Rockefeller Barber or Denker tournament of champions held concurrently with the US Open in Norfolk, VA July 27-Aug 4, 2024.

When:  2/10/2024 Saturday 10:00 AM

Where:  Holiday Inn 6111 Fleur Drive, Des Moines, IA 50321. Phone 515.287.2400 HR: $105, if reserved in advance.  The tournament will be on the second floor.

Three Sections: Rockefeller Grades K-5, Barber Grades 6-8, Denker Grades 9-12 

Four-round Swiss system.  G/60; d5 10:am, 12:30 pm, 3:00 pm, ASAP.  Also, if a section has 8 players or fewer, there will only be 3 rounds.  One ½ point bye available for each section must be requested before round 1.

Prizes

  • Denker: High School trophies for the top 3 and best U1400 and U1000.
  • Barber: Grades 6th-8th grade and trophies for top 3 and best U1200, U1000, U800, U600, and unrated.
  • Rockefeller: K-5 Grade Trophies top 3 best U800, U600, U400, and Unrated

Entry Fee: $25 before 2/9 11:59 pm; $30 thereafter and onsite

Registration: On-Site Registration from 9:15 am to 9:45 am. Individuals registering after 9:45 am will receive 1/2pt 1st round bye.

Additional Info: Accelerated pairings may be used if necessary.   Tiebreaker: 2 rounds G15 d2 (each player will get black then white) If no winner is determined, then blitz g5 no delay or a winner is determined after two games.  The winner will have the right to represent Iowa in the Rockefeller, Barber, or Denker National Tournament of Champions held concurrently with the US Open in Norfolk, VA July 27-Aug 4, 2024. A stipend will be available to assist with travel expenses.  (Estimated $300 based on last year's stipend. 2024 stipend is dependent on the availability of funds in the Iowa Scholastic Budget and the vote of the Iowa State Scholastic Board of Directors)  Players must complete all games in the tournament, submit copies (scoresheets) of all their games played, and submit one annotated game to Iowa En Passant to receive the stipend.
