2024 WISCONSIN STATE SCHOLASTIC CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

***Please note: due to changes at the University of Oshkosh (including staff cuts and inability to offer any dorm rooms for lodging) the event this year is a ONE-DAY tournament***

K-12, K-8, K-5 FORMAT:  these sections are 5-round individual Swiss tournaments with participation open to any Wisconsin student in grades K-12, K-8, or K-5, respectively. Only Wisconsin students are eligible. No out-of-state entries are allowed in this event. Players of all abilities are encouraged to participate. This is not a US Chess rated event.

The time control for the K-12, K-8 and K-5 individual sections is Game in 30 minutes with a 5-second delay. Boards and sets are provided. Please bring clocks. 

 

BYES: up to two 1/2-point byes are allowed if requested before round one (email Chris Wainscott at chris.wainscott13@outlook.com with bye requests).

 

RATINGS: Tournament Directors can choose the highest of the published US Chess ratings (regular, online regular, quick, online quick)  for pairing purposes only. Ratings are not affected by this event. The March Rating Supplement will be used.  March ratings should be available at www.uschess.org/msa in late February.

 

PRIZES:  In each of the K-12, K-8 and K-5 sections, the top ten individuals and the top six teams will be awarded trophies. The state championship title and traveling trophies will be presented to the K-8 and K-5 team champions. Every participant is eligible for an additional award (medal, chocolate or fruit leather), especially if they castle.

 

TIEBREAKS: the order of tiebreaks for team and individual prizes is Solkoff, Cumulative Opposition, Cumulative, Modified Median.

 

ENTRY FEE:  The early bird entry fee is $35 per player if received by March 13th. The regular entry fee is $45 per player if received by March 21st. The late entry fee is $60 per player and is accepted until 7:00am on March 23rd. Online payments are preferred. If you need to make an alternative arrangement, please email Chris Wainscott at chris.wainscott13@outlook.com  Checks can be made payable to Chris Wainscott.

 

PLAYING SITE: K-12, K-8, and K-5 individual sections will play in room 227 of the Reeve Memorial Student Union, UW Oshkosh: 800 Algoma Blvd., Oshkosh, WI. The skittles room will be Reeve Union cafeteria. Room 208D will be the Tournament Director’s room. Day parking can be found in lot 15 across the street from Reeve Union and is free on the weekend.

 

FOOD OPTIONS AT THE PLAYING SITE: We were able to negotiate better hours for this year. All places are located at the playing site:

Reeve Coffee House:             8:00am - 2:00pm

Convenience Store:              10:00am - 5:00pm

ACCOMMODATIONS:

Unfortunately, dorm rooms will not  be available this year.

PARKING: For parking around Gruenhagen cars should use the High Avenue ramp on the corner of High and Osceola Streets. Please use level 1 or 3. Level 2 is reserved for resident students. Other possible parking locations include Lot 30 at the end Gruenhagen. Day parking is free on the weekend but UW-O now charges $5 for overnight parking. Purchase permits in advance at:  Parking Services (aimsparking.com). Click on: ‘Purchase a Permit’ then ‘Weekend Visitor Permit’. Day parking can be in lot 15 on Algoma Blvd. across from Reeve Union

  

SIDE EVENT: Waupaca High School will sponsor the Wisconsin State Bughouse Championship. It will be held in room 202, start around 7:00pm, and will conclude no later than 9:00pm. Click here for info or to register.
