JV, K8, K5 FORMAT:  The Junior VarsityK-8 and K-5 sections are 6-Round individual Swiss tournaments with participation open to any Wisconsin student in grades K-12, K-8 or K-5 respectively. No out-of-state entries are allowed in this event.

Players of all abilities are encouraged to participate. This is not a US Chess rated event.

Round 1 -  9:30    

Round 2 -  Noon

Round 3 -  2:30

Round 4 -  5:00

Sunday:         

Round 5 -  9:00       

Round 6 - 11:30    

Awards – 2:00  

 

The time control for the JV, K-8 and K-5 is Game in 60 minutes with a 5 second delay. Please bring clocks as only a few clocks will be available for checkout. Please have your players bring an ID to check out these clocks.

 

PLAYING SITEThree sections (JV, K-8, K-5) will play in Room 227 of the Reeve Memorial Student Union, UW-Oshkosh; JV boards 1-25 will play in room 221 800 Algoma Blvd., Oshkosh, WI. The skittles room will be Reeve Union cafeteria. Room 208D will be the Tournament Director’s room. Day parking can be found in lot 15 across the street from Reeve Union and is free on the weekend. The Reeve Union Marketplace Sub Connection will be open both days 8:30 am – 1:30 pm. The Pizza Hut will be open 11 am – 1:30 pm. The Titan Underground will be open 10 am – 2 pm both weekend days.

 

PRIZES:  In each of the Junior Varsity, K-8 and K-5 sections, the top ten individuals and the top six teams will be awarded trophies. The state championship title and traveling trophies will be presented to the K-8 and K-5 team champions. Every participant is eligible for an additional award (medal, chocolate or fruit leather), especially if they castle!

 

TIEBREAKS: the order of tiebreaks for team and individual prizes is Solkoff, Cumulative Opposition, Cumulative, Modified Median.

 

ENTRY FEE:  The early bird entry fee is $35 per player if received by March 6th. The regular entry fee is $45 per player if received by March 16th. The late entry fee is $60 per player and is accepted until 7:30am on March 18th. Online payments are preferred. EQUIPMENT: Boards and sets for the JV, K-8 and K-5 sections will be provided. Please bring clocks.

 

RATINGS: Tournament Directors can choose the highest of the published US Chess ratings (regular, online regular, quick, online quick)  for pairing purposes only. Ratings are not affected by this event. March Rating Supplement is used.

 

BYES: up to two 1/2-point byes are allowed if requested before round one (email Chris Wainscott at chris.wainscott13@outlook.com with request).

 

ACCOMMODATIONS:

 

OPTION 1: (more comfortable, good for families): *We have arranged a chess rate of $89 at the La Quinta in Oshkosh. Free wifi, breakfast, parking and a 1:00 pm checkout.* Single and double rooms are available. Additional Hotel: Best Western offers $109 chess rate, please call them directly at 920-230-1900 and mention chess when making reservations.

 

OPTION 2: (cheaper):  Dorm rooms are available at Gruenhagen Conference Center for $40 single or double plus a 10% room tax. Dorm rooms include two towels, a washcloth, soap and linens per bed. To reserve your rooms, please call Gruenhagen directly at (920) 424-1106. Mention chess. Gruenhagen asks that one person per team pay for the rooms and pick up the keys. Please note that Gruenhagen charges $115 for lost keys. There is a 5:00 pm Friday, March 10 cutoff for lodging room reservations. Make lodging checks out to “UW-Oshkosh”CHECK IN/OUT POLICY:  All coaches or their adult designee are responsible for checking out each lodging room assigned to their team upon check in and check out. A check-in form will be provided to each team for each room and should be returned to the desk as soon as possible. Any damages discovered by Gruenhagen in your rooms will be billed to your school. CHAPERONES:  All teams staying in the dorms are required to have a chaperone staying in the dorms. Please note that that among other violations, Gruenhagen charges for furniture that has been moved between rooms, screen removal and for tampering with the smoke detector. Serious offenses will disallow a student/team from staying at the conference center in the future.

 

PARKING: For parking around Gruenhagen cars should use the High Avenue ramp on the corner of High and Osceola Streets. Please use level 1 or 3. Level 2 is reserved for resident students. Other possible parking locations include Lot 30 at the end Gruenhagen. Day parking is free on the weekend but UW-O now charges $5 for overnight parking. Purchase permits in advance at:  Parking Services (aimsparking.com). Click on: ‘Purchase a Permit’ then ‘Weekend Visitor Permit’. Day parking can be in lot 15 on Algoma Blvd. across from Reeve Union

  

COACHES' MEETING: We will discuss and ratify all rules and changes at the meeting in room 307 (theater) at 1:30pm (shortly after the 2nd  round for Varsity starts). Any rules change proposals need to be sent out one month before the event. Any rules changes not sent out a month in advance need a super-majority to pass.

 

SIDE EVENT: Waupaca High School will sponsor the State Scholastic Bughouse Tournament Saturday nightThe tournament will be held in room 202. It will begin as soon as all Varsity games are completed, but no sooner than 8:00pm.
