2021 Tucson Open

Southern Arizona Chess Association presents the 2021 Tucson Open, which will be held on March 6, 2021 on Chess.com and ChessKid.

The event is not limited to players in southern Arizona and is open to anyone with a US Chess membership. The event offers cash prizes and is US Chess online rated.

Requires Chess.com account (free) and Zoom login (all sections) with webcam while playing. Current USCF membership is required. Scholastic section will be played on chesskid.com and requires a free Chesskid.com account.

Highest established USCF rating (Regular or Quick, Online or OTB) will be used for section placement. Chess.com or Chesskid.com ratings will be used for pairing purposes only. It is recommended that you play some casual games on the platform before the event to establish a rapid rating.

 

Tournament Sections:

Premier (USCF 1800+)

Reserve (USCF 1400 – 1799)

Booster (U1400 USCF)

Scholastic (Grade K-6 AND USCF U1000)

 

Time Control

Premier, Reserve and Booster sections will be 5SS. Time Control G25 + 5

Scholastic section will be 7SS. Time Control G10 + 5.

 

Details:

Premier (USCF 1800+): EF $30, add $5 after 3/3/21. GMs and IMs are free. $5 play up fee for 1600-1799 USCF. Prizes: $160 - $80 - $40, b/16 paid entries. Increased/decreased proportionally based on entries. 50% guaranteed.

Reserve (USCF 1400 – 1799): EF $25, add $5 after 3/3/21. $5 play up fee for U1400 USCF. Prizes: $100 – $60 b/16 paid entries. 50% guaranteed.

Booster (U1400 USCF): EF $25, add $5 after 3/3/21. Prizes $60 - $30 (Amazon Gift Cards), B/10 paid entries. 50% guaranteed.

Scholastic (Grade K-6 and USCF U1000): EF $20, add $5 after 3/3/21. Prizes $50 - $25 (Amazon Gift Cards), B/10 paid entries. 50% guaranteed.

 

Premier, Reserve, and Booster Schedule (Chess.com):

Tournament starts at 10 AM MST. Check in for the tournament on Zoom begins at 9 am MST. You can also join the tournament on Chess.com starting at 9 am MST. You must log in and join the tournament by then or you will not be paired. Subsequent rounds begin immediately after the previous round for your section is done. Tournament is expected to be completed by 3 PM MST or sooner. All entries close at 7 PM MST on 3/5/21.

 

Scholastic K-6 Schedule (ChessKid):

Tournament starts at 10 AM MST. Check in for the tournament on Zoom begins at 9 am MST. You can also join the tournament on ChessKid starting at 9:30 am MST. You must log in and join the tournament by then or you will not be paired. Subsequent rounds will have a 5 minute break between rounds (5 minute breaks begins after all games are finished for that round). Tournament is expected to be completed by 1:45 PM MST or sooner. All entries close at 7 PM MST on 3/5/21.

 

Registration Details:

Premier (USCF 1800+): EF $30, add $5 after 3/3/21. GMs and IMs are free. $5 play up fee for 1600-1799 USCF.

All entries close at 7 PM MST on 3/5/21.

Players must also have a current US Chess membership. You can join or renew here

 

Tournament Details: 

  • Players must have a Chess.com or ChessKid account (You can sign up for one for free).
  • Pairings are done automatically by the Chess.com/ChessKid system and cannot be changed.
  • Tournament will be US Chess Online rated (does not affect US Chess OTB ratings). Tournament submitted for rating and prizes paid 10-14 days after the tournament to allow for games to be screened for fair play. 
  • Byes cannot be requested.
  • Tournament link will be shared the day before the tournament.
  • Tournament link opens 1 hour before the tournament starts (30 minutes on ChessKid).
  • Players are advised to participate in the tournament from a computer. It is not recommended to play on a phone or mobile device.
  • Players are advised to join the tournament AND the Zoom call 20-30 minutes early. If you join at the last minute it may be too late to resolve any technical issues that you have.
  • Players may be able to join the tournament late, but will receive zero points for any missed rounds. Limited late entry is available but is not guaranteed.
  • Reentry is not available.
  • SACA is not responsible for wifi connection or technical issues.

 

Fair Play

  • Players are required to join the Zoom call for the duration of the tournament in order to be eligible for prizes.
  • SACA reserves the right to ask players to share their computer screen during the tournament.
  •  Tournament games will be reviewed by Chess.com and SACA tournament staff. SACA reserves the right to interview players after the tournament to determine prize eligibility.
  • SACA will abide by Chess.com Fair Play rules & US Chess policies. US Chess rules & consequences apply.
  • Computers and outside help are not allowed.
  • Players found in violation of Fair Play policies are not eligible for prize and will be removed from SACA's club. Chess.com & US Chess consequences may also apply.
  • Parents, please have your player watch ChessKid's Fair Play video and help them understand that it's just not worth it
