Dates:

July 16  (Friday), for Blitz and Bughouse,

July 17 - July 18, for Open Championship

 

Location: SpringHill Suites, One Riverfront Plaza, Lawrence, KS 66044

 

Room rates: $129 USD per night.

Rate includes: Free Breakfast, Wi-Fi internet, parking, fitness center and pool usage.

Reservations must be made by June 18, 2021 to get lower rate.

Entry Fee:

$55 advance, online registration only by July 14, 2021 at 11:59PM

$75 for registration after July 14, 2021.

Scholastic Discount:

Scholastic players (K-12 students) who do NOT want to compete for cash prizes but instead play for one of two plaques in Reserve or Amateur, can enter the Reserve or Amateur sections for $25. Scholastics can play in Open section for $25, but there are no plaques in the Open section except for the State Champion plaque.

 

USCF & KCA membership required:

KCA Membership is $10 for family, $7 for adults, and $5 for juniors (18 and under).  Current KCA membership required for all Kansas residents. Out of state memebrships are accepted.

On-site Registration:

July 17 from 8:30 – 9:30 am.  After 9:30 you may not be paired for rd 1.

 

5 Round SS:

7/17    10:00am , 2:30pm, 7:00pm;                       7/18    9:30am , 2:00pm

 A single, 1/2-point bye is available any round if requested the start of the 2nd round.

 

Time Controls:  All sections, game in 100 minutes, with 5 second delay

 

Three Sections (using July 2021 rating Supplement):

Open Section          – Open to all,

Reserve Section     – 1799 and below,

Amateur-                  – 1399 and below

 

Prizes:

Prizes based on 80 total non-scholastic rate entries in All sections

 

Open Section:         1st = $350, 2nd = $250, and 3rd = $150

                                                U1900: 1st = $120

                         Bonus prize of $25 and plaque to top player from Kansas (State Champion)

 

            Reserve Section:   1st = $300, 2nd = $200, 3rd = $100

                                                1599 and below: 1st = $75

                         Bonus prize of $25 and plaque for top player from Kansas

 

            Amateur Section    1st = $250, 2nd = $150, 3rd = $75

                                                1199 and below- $50

                         Bonus prize of $25 and plaque to top player from Kansas

 

All prizes are paid in full by check when a clear result is determined.

Equipment: Please bring boards, sets and clocks to the event.

 

Other: Players are expected to know the rules in U.S. Chess Federation’s Official Rules of Chess - 7th edition and any updated rule changes since the 7th edition. There is a time delay of 5 seconds. One Half-point bye is offered for rounds 1-5, if requested prior before the start of the round 2.

COVID-19 TOURNAMENT PROCEDURES AND RULES:

 

  • Vaccinated Players are not required to wear a mask. The KCA will not inquire as to whether a player has been vaccinated.

 

  • Only registered players are allowed into the playing hall --- no spectators are allowed in the playing room. One parent/guardian of a playing minor child is strongly recommended be at the playing venue. Those that are not registered players or TDs will be asked to leave.

 

  • No food or drinks allowed in the playing hall. There will be no water stations in the ballroom either. Players must consume their snacks outside the playing hall at one of the high-top tables.

 

  • Players must be able to check pairings and standings online at KS Open Pairing Info . For those who do not have limited access to phone/computer, players may ask the TD on the floor to obtain the board number and color, but this is strongly discouraged for those who have the capability to lookup the pairings online before they arrive at the playing hall/board.

 

  • Players must use the organizer’s provided carbon-copy scoresheet to record their moves.

 

  • In order to minimize crowding around a pairing board, each table will have a result slip. Players will need to fill out the result slip and leave a copy of their scoresheet at their table; TDs will pick up the result slips when all players have finished their games.

 

  • Players are considered a spectator after they have finished their game and must leave the playing hall until the cleaning staff have finished their task.

 

Registration:

 

Online registration will open on June 1, 2021 at 12:00PM; the registration system will be closed on July 14, 2021 at 11:59PM.

 

In the event that local, state, and/or federal health guidelines prevents the tournament to be held, all players’ entry fees will be refunded.

 

Notes: Tie-breaks if necessary, to determine Blitz, Open, Reserve, and Amateur champions: 1) Solkoff, (2) Cumulative, (3) Modified Median and (4) Median. No Insufficient losing chances for all events at the 2021 Kansas Open. Players are expected to know the rules in the U.S. Chess Federation’s Official Rules of Chess - 7th edition and any updated rule changes since the 7th edition.

If more than 32 players in a section, TD reserves the right to use accelerated pairings for that section.

KCA Annual Meeting (7/18/2021), which runs 8 – 9 AM, in the playing area. KCA membership must be current to vote. Kansas KCA members encouraged to attend. 

 

Free entry for GMs, WGMs, IM, WIMs with advanced entry fee taken out of any winnings: Open - $55 and Blitz - $30. Must contact Laurence Coker via email prior to event to get this special entry.
